Effects of a Sandtray on Depression of the Adolescent Victims of the Family Violence

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine effects of a sandtray on depression of the adolescent victims of the family violence. The subjects of the study are the adolescents residing in OO Shelter for Victims of the Family Violence in B City. The adolescents with symptoms of depression were selected by a recommendation of the employee in the shelter and two adolescents were subjected to this study based on a depression test. The research task is to examine effects of a sandtray on depression involved depression scale, changes in behavior, and in subject matter of the adolescent victims of the family violence. The process was based on the six steps of Boik and Goo, in's (2000) 'Create Worl,' 'Experience and Realnge,' 'Heal,' 'Take Photo,' 'Trce.fer,' and 'Disassemble.' and implemented once a week for 50 minutes per session for 14 times in total. To study the effects of the sandtray on the depression of the adolescents, the depression scales before and after the program were rated by adolescent themselves. In addition, the changes in the subjected adolescent's depression expression were explored and analyzed by an index of depression behavior during sessions, Besides, the subject matter appeared in the works of sandtray were analyzed according to each sessions. The results of the study are as follows. The sandtray had a significant effect on the depression of the adolescent victims of the family violence. The depression scores of subjected adolescents changed from a serious depression to a minor depression. Their depression tendency decreased as the program progressed. As for the subject matter in a session, both subjects showed a positive change from the depressive mode to the positive emotion by expressing a desire to solve problems in reality and a hope for the future. Although the study was a case study of two individuals with limitations for a generalization, the results of the study showed the usefulness for arts psycholtherapy, as the sandtray had a positive effect on the depression of the victims of the family violence.
